Chris Douglas

As a NCAA Division-1 cross country/track runner at Bradley University, Chris learned to swim and bike to cross train through a battery of running injuries. After sitting on the sidelines for over a year, he made the switch to triathlon in 2013 in pursuit of a more sustainable challenge. Triathlon resonated with Chris, and he quickly immersed himself in the triathlon community as an athlete, as the president of a local tri club, and as a race director. In 2014, after graduating and moving to Atlanta to start on his PhD at Georgia Tech, Chris connected with EC Coach Cody Elder. Under Cody’s coaching and mentorship, Chris progressed steadily and soon became a regular at the front of local events and national championship races alike. In 2016, USA Triathlon named him Male Athlete of the Year, and recognized him as an honorable mention for the same title again in 2018. Today, Chris continues to enjoy triathlon training and racing as a member of Team Every Man Jack and specializes in the olympic and 70.3 distances. He serves the multisport community as a regular volunteer in Atlanta-area endurance events and as the Captain of the Georgia Tech Triathlon Team.

Chris’ excitement and enthusiasm for triathlon has always extended beyond his own pursuits. As a coach, Chris aims to develop and mentor athletes using a science-based, goal-oriented approach which emphasizes mental engagement and consistency over blind targets and individual workouts. Core elements of his holistic coaching philosophy include:

1. Every workout should be done with a specific purpose, even if that purpose is physical and/or mental recovery.

2. Uncertainty is inefficient for both a coach’s planning and an athlete’s execution, and daily coach-athlete dialogue is essential to minimizing it.

3. A healthy training plan is not rigid. Flexibility, combined with strong communication, allows for optimal training of busy athletes.

Chris is currently considering applications from athletes who are committed to the practice of self-improvement and dedicated to the pursuit of challenging, long-term goals.
